Pookalam: Onam festival is celebrated with great fun and fervour in the state of Kerala and by all malayalees living across the globe. King Mahabhali is the favourite king of Kerala and he was banished into the neverland by the fifth incarnation of Vishnu(Vaman Avatar). It's believed that every year King Mahabali returns to Kerala to see if his people are living happily, and to welcome him people celebrate onam. Onam pookalam designs are created using flowers and they are like cirlces of flowers. In this post we have included onam pookalam photos and pookalam designs for your inspiration. Every year onam falls in the Chingam masam of the malayalam calendar year, which is normally between August and September. Onam celebrations last for 10 days, with the first day known as Atham and the 10th day as Thiruonam. On Thiruonam day, large sadhyas(feast) are prepared in almost all homes. Many years back, onam pookalam designs were created using ten different kinds of flowers, but nowadays it's a little more lenient. In the center of the pookalam, a clay statue is placed for representing King Mahabali. King Mahabali was a very good king, but his greed to capture the indra loka(heaven), became the end of him by God Vishnu.
